Do you feel stuck? Are you tired of trying to think yourself out of the situation you’re in?  Have you tried traditional ways of getting unstuck, like psychotherapy, but still haven’t found that one thing that makes life vibrant and meaningful?

Mind-Body Life Coaching in San Francisco and on Skype

A lot of my clients are already pretty conscious. Many are into yoga, eat well, and take care of themselves.  Some have already spent time in the psychotherapist’s chair; so they get “the why” of what’s holding them back, but they still haven’t found a way to make life sparkle in a way they know it can.  That’s where I come in.

My clients and I have an unusually honest conversation; in fact, for some it’s a totally radical one.  Most of them have become habituated to listening to the self-doubting, fearful voices in their head that resist change at all costs.  That’s why they’re stuck.  In the dialogue I share with my clients, we focus on the wise, intuitive, and creative parts, and, in so doing, create breakthroughs in terms of their fulfillment.  It’s really when my clients start making decisions and living from this place that their lives take on a whole new quality.

I also help some of my clients develop a friendly relationship to their wound.  This is the part of us where we feel shame, hurt, or self-loathing. Many of us don’t have a relationship with this part of ourselves.  We tend to be taught to ignore it or somehow get over it.  I teach my clients how to both relate and create from the wound.  When my clients stop being afraid of it, and, in fact, develop the capacity to bring a quality of warmth or kindness to it,  something magical emerges.  And for each of my clients that thing is different.  For some, it’s creativity.  For others it’s altruism.  When my clients get comfortable with their wound, they stop being afraid and, in fact, sense their innate power.

How it works

Oftentimes my clients start coaching in a place where they’re stuck.  That’s why they call me in the first place!  So often the initial work is about helping my clients clarify the tangles they’ve gotten themselves into; to show them the power they have to ‘unstick’ themselves; and to hold them accountable to doing so.

The work really gets going when my clients start to put words to their life purpose and values.  Through questions and dialogue, they discover that there’s a thread of brilliance or perfection to the lives they’ve been leading, that they’re lives are not random; in fact, when they look closely, each of my clients discovers that he or she has always had a unique mission and set of ideals that he or she feels compelled to fulfill.  These are different from the ideals their parents, spouses, or children want for them.  They don’t feel mandatory, moral, or like a burden; in fact, they feel exciting, alive, and authentic.  Once the life purpose and values have been distinguished, they act like compasses that remind my clients when they’re living life “on purpose” and when they’re fulfilling someone else’s sense of right and wrong.

And when that’s clear, they start to put their dreams and aspirations into motion through commitment and action. At this point in the journey, I help my clients stay connected to their vision, support them in handling fear and procrastination, and teach them powerful mind-body techniques that help them create ongoing breakthroughs in their relationships, their work, and whatever areas of life they bring to the coaching conversation.

An Example of what can happen in Mind-Body Life Coaching

Jean came to coaching in order to find out “what the flame inside [was] saying,” to “carve out a new direction in life.” She was also looking for skills to quiet the anxiety she felt, handle her stress, have fun and relax a little bit more. She recognized that most of her decisions were based on the fear of being poor and destitute even though she knew that her actual life did not match her fears. She wanted to figure out a way to let go of this gripping fear and, in addition, move in a new direction in her career.

Jean was really into the idea of incorporating yoga and meditation with life coaching. I worked with Jean for four months. Two of those months she received coaching weekly while she maintained a yoga and meditation practice designed specifically for her. In addition, out of our weekly coaching sessions, she was given various readings from books and articles. Sometimes she was asked to have a conversation with her husband or someone she was out of touch with. Other times she was asked to contemplate what it was that she was reading or discovering in her coaching sessions.

Within two months, she discovered that she could “let go.” Essentially she had found a place inside of herself where she could deeply relax, so when the going got tough and she would normally be stressed out, she was able to go with the flow more. The anxiety that normally had her not only mentally, but physically as well no longer controlled her. In addition, she now feels capable not only to make choices in life that inspire her, but she feels compelled to live from a place of inspiration. The fear of being destitute, while not gone altogether, no longer has the same power over her. As a result of these shifts, she has started a new business, one that aligns with her values. She estimates that within a year, she will be able to be completely supported by this business.

She now describes her life in the following way: “I used to feel unsure of myself whenever I had to make even the most minor decision. Because of coaching, I now make choices based on my values, as opposed to the anxiety and stress that was driving me. This has me living a very different life. In the past, my choices were based on avoiding my fears. Because I can no longer find these fears, my choices are based on what brings me aliveness, excitement, and personal meaning.”

Coaching by Skype: I do coach people who are not local. I prefer to do it over Skype. I have found this to be an excellent medium for coaching.
